One of the only countries with an all-year-round favorable tropical climate for playing golf, Colombia has gained newer heights.  Maria Claudia La couture, the director of Colombia’s tourism and investment promotion board proudly boasts of the exotic and diverse locations by claiming that in a country like Colombia you can play golf adjacent to the Andes mountain range, the brilliant blue of the Caribbean Sea or even next to a coffee plantation. Colombia has managed to change its perception of guns, goons and drug trafficking to a golfers dream!

Golf history of Colombia

Colombia’s rather feisty and notorious history is no secret to. Golf is a new addition to the country and it is still considered a highly exclusive pastime and hobby reserved for the elite. While the tourism industry and the Golf Federation is trying to make this leisurely activity more accessible to the public, the green fees on public courses are still unaffordable for the common people. Tourists can arrange private clubs but not many locals. Why not travel to Colombia today and make sure of your foreigner status as you stroll through the gloriously lush fields and play golf in this emerging new gold center of the contemporary era?

Diverse regions and stunning golf courses

Colombia is no stranger to diversity with a rich cultural mix of ethnicities and races; this beautiful South American country is amongst the top 17 mega-diverse countries of the world. Awe-worthy ecology and an amalgam of tall mountain ranges, coastlines and grasslands make it home to over 50 golf courses that draw golfers and millions of tourists alike per annum. Golfers thrive for challenge and thrill in a game that might seem boring to onlookers and what better challenge than to be able to play and compete in exciting golf ranges such as the Club de Golf La Cima; a thrilling course with a hole situated 3,000 meters at sea level; one of the highest holes in the world! The billowing curves and scenery are cherry to the top. Golfing however still remains an elitist hobby at large in Colombia. The rich and wealthy have private golf clubs privy to pricey memberships that a select few can afford. Public golf courses are rare if not hard to find.  Tourists however can rejoice! Where does one start golfing at in this country that is gaining popularity for its golfing ventures? Let’s start with Bogotá!

The ideally fresh weather, courtesy of the Andes mountain range and the 2,600-3,000m above sea level altitude makes Bogotá the perfect region to take off your golfing adventure. This city has over ten 18-hole golf courses. Looking for something grand? The San Andrés Golf Club (Par 72) is the place to be. It is amongst the more exclusive and celebrated golf courses in Bogota and has a long history of British immigrants. Almost 15 miles away another amazing golf course awaits your arrival; the Club El Rincón de Cajicá (Par 72) is in the small town of Cajica, north of Bogota. Want to play golf on top the world? Challenge the adrenaline junkie inside you and head for the golf club La Cima (par 70) near La Calera and experience the feeling of being 3,000m above sea level. Pay your tributes to one of the most renowned Professional Golfers Association (PGA) player Camilo Villegas who has inspired many young golfers, by making your way to the most exclusive golf club near Medellin, the Club Campestre Llano Grande. Medellin, host to some amazing golf courses in the state also has a public golf course, which is of adequate standards and charming indeed. Golfers can rent clubs and even balls without breaking their banks. Tourists seeking for a more charitable experience can opt for another golf club, the El Rodeo (Par 72).
